Sociology is a discipline where we study the changes in social life, social causes, and effects of human behavior on society. Sociology as a discipline helps students to develop critical thinking skills and the ability to gather and measure quantitative as well as qualitative changes. Sociology also involves investigating different structures such as society, institutions, communities, or groups of people as different entities. 

 

If a person is curious about the dynamics in which societies, families, or communities work, Sociology can prove to be the best avenue of study and further employment for him or her. Students of sociology go for conducting many research projects to study social issues prevailing in the society, test various theories and also perform analytics to develop better models for social development. 

Sociology as a discipline deals with a wide variety of topic including public policy, family issues, dynamics of aging, professional roles, marital advantages and disadvantages, gender roles, deviance in society, mass attitude development, criminology, dynamics of group interaction, causes for divorce, social demographics, etc. 

Educational Requirements

To pursue a career in Sociology, a candidate needs to do Bachelor’s in Sociology after his or her 10+2 exam and after completing Bachelor’s in Sociology, one can go for a Master’s in Sociology with 60% as a minimum aggregate at the undergraduate level. 

Following are the career options that are available with an individual if he or she goes for a career in Sociology:

Administrative Support

Individuals with a career in Sociology can go on to become the administrative staff at universities, colleges, and schools. At this level, the work of the sociologist would be to understand human behavior, assess individual and mass psychology and understand troubleshoot issues.

Social Worker

As per the estimates, there is one NGO for every 1000 people in India. This could be achieved due to the hard work put in by the social workers. Being a social worker means working towards improving societies and helping people to make their lives worth living. Social Worker is the most sought-after job for the students of Sociology. Sociology as a discipline involves acquiring the knowledge of social dynamics and understand the social issues prevailing in various social aspects of lives thereby, finding ways to resolve those problems. The work of a social worker includes referring such problems to appropriate community agencies so that the resources can be properly allotted to the individual and families who direly need such resources.

Rehabilitation Counsellor

Youth forms the backbone of any society. In India, the young population is increasing at a significant rate and it is expected that it will continue to rise in the coming future. With youth, comes zeal. There might be circumstances in any individual’s youth that might have forced him or her to take the wrong steps and make bad decisions like involvement in any crime, etc. Youth might also be scarred from the traumatizing events that would have taken place in their lives like sexual abuse by their family members or sexual abuse in general, etc. We need a rehabilitation counselor in such circumstances to ensure that youths who are being misled in their lives and had traumatizing experiences can get past such events and make a fresh start in their life.

Journalists

Journalist 

Nowadays news agencies are looking for those candidates who can understand and analyze social situations. Sociology seems to be the apt option for such career adventures. Those with a flair for writing and having a good command of the language with an ability to observe mass attitude can go for journalism as their career option.

Policy Analyst

At times, legislators might not be able to understand the ground reality or issues of common people. Those who have studied Sociology know the ground reality and therefore, they have been appointed as a policy analyst to make recommendations and suggestions to the policy put forward by the legislators. Sociologists are required to make use of their knowledge from the research to help legislators understand if there can some negative impact of any policy on the population.

Family counselors

Since Sociologists study family issues, they are good at observing and critically thinking about different family or marital issues and reflect upon the same.

Human Resource (HR) Specialist

Hr Analysts 

Studying Sociology also includes interacting and observing a large number of people. This skill can prove to be helpful in Human Resources where an HR specialist is expected to interact with job applicants, analyze if the job role suits the candidate’s personality, and interview that candidate to arrive at a decision.

Media planner

Top companies require Sociologists to help marketers create advertising campaigns that will best appeal to mass psychology. Sociologists are also required to analyze data and create market surveys.
