After completing 12th, a student has lots of options, in any stream that one is interested in.
Only that he needs to select a career not based on percentage but interest towards that subject.
One must choose a career based on their Aptitude and interest.
Hence I would suggest that you should opt for a Career Counseling or Aptitude tests.
The test would give you and him an idea as to what are his strengths and based on his Aptitude career best suited for him.
Self evaluation too helps. But sometimes the child tends to get bias in this method.

Choosing a career is a process. As suggested by Ms. Mukherjee, the 1st step is Assessment. Aptitude, Interest and Personality. All the 3 are equally important in selecting a career.
Options available for a student to pursue after 10th are numerous. Apart from the loved medical and engineering streams, there is lot more that one can do in fields of Commerce and Arts as well.
Commerce gives you options of Accounting, Banking, Finance, Management, etc and Arts will have options like Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy,etc and you also have options in Fine Arts.
Discuss about subjects/ fields at home and with family will also help in knowing his interests.
