I want to do PhD from a recognized institute in India or USA, which is a good 1?

I did my MA in Sociology securing 45%. Will I be able to do PhD further from any of the recognized institute? Which is the best institute to do a PhD for Ego & Super Ego in India or America? What are the technical details of doing the course in India or America? (Duration, Worthiness, Applications, etc.)

Hi

Many thanks for contacting us. I appreciate your idea of doing a PhD in India or USA. PhD is the highest academic achievement and completing a Phd in your subject you will be a scholar of that subject. It is a prestigious title in academic sector. You said you have a MA in sociology but you did not say in what subject you want to study a Phd. You want to study a PhD in Sociology? Can you please be clear with the name of subject you want to study? For example, you can tell if it is PhD in Sociology or PhD in Psychology. You said you have scored 45% in your MA Sociology. I think to get a PhD admission offer you need to have a minimum of first class degree i.e. you should have ideally scored 60% through out. Moreover, PhD in India requires strictly following a +3+2 route. Did you take this route? Did you study a 3 year bachelors degree or 4 year bachelors degree and then do your two year masters degree? Also applying for a PhD in India requires you to take some competitive exams. India HRD runs UGC-Net exam and every candidate applying for a PhD should take this exam. But in order to sit for Net exam, one should have scored minimum 55% overall in MSc in India
. If you are a SC/ST candidate, 50% in your masters degree is sufficient. But with your case, your score of 45% in your MA Sociology will not make you eligible to give Net exam.
But don't worry. If you seriously want to do a PhD in India or abroad, you can try hard still. I suggest you can also study second Masters course in the area you want to study for your PhD. Try your best to score more than 60% in this second Masters degree and then apply for a PhD by sitting for Net exam in India. It takes up to three years to complete a phd in India. Doing a PhD anywhere in the world is rewarding and completely worth. A phd in USA will take five years to complete. If you want to study PhD in USA, I am not sure if you will pass the eligibility criteria to apply for a PhD as even US institutions require a minimum first class, above 60% in your MSc/MA study. Apart from this, you should have also be ready with your English language qualifying tests like either IELTS/TOEFL and pass either of these exams with a very good score. You should also take a general GRE test and submit these test scores along with your PhD application online.
In my opinion, I would suggest you to study a second masters degree, and achieve more than 55%-60% or even above and then apply for phd in India or USA. Please feel free to write to me if you have any further questions. All the best for your future.
