Dear Student,

Psychology is a good field if you have right aptitude and interest to pursue it . The growing understanding of psychology and its importance has brought itself with plethora of career opportunities. It holds the solution to a thousand mental, social and psychological problems human beings find themselves battling with. Psychology is an extremely complex science working on pure logic and reasoning combined with apt sensitivity. Psychology is usually taught at the 12 or equivalent level with other social sciences. Most universities offer the subject as a Bachelors Honors programme. After graduation you can opt for MA or MSc in Psychology , Social work or Counseling. Post graduate courses in Psychology are offered only to students who have graduated with psychology . Specializations in the subject can be pursued at the post graduate level or at the doctoral level- MPhil or PhD, after post graduation. At the master's and doctoral level, the subject becomes increasingly specialized. What you take up as your specialization decides which career path you can follow. For example, sports psychologists should have an extensive educational background and training in sports , motivation management, performance and athletics.

Hello,

Thank you for choosing Meracareerguide and writing to us. I understand you have developed interest into psychology lately and I understand it happens to many to find interest in new subjects. But before you embark on a career in Psychology, it is very much needed to check yourself if you are really interested in doing it and if you really want to be in this field. I advice you to do psychometric test available on this website and carefully check if your personality fits into psychology field. Alternatively you can also obtain a personalised counselling report from us if you like to have one.

First of all, to have a career in Psychology, it requires you to have studied in-depth knowledge in psychological theories. This is required only of you want to be a Clinical psychologist. However you may try studying other branches of psychology, if you don't have a relevant psychology background. You can study Counselling psychology if you like to pursue. This actually doesn't require in-depth psychology theories to be able to study Counselling Psychology at a Masters level. So please feel free to study either MA/MSc Applied Psychology or MSc Counselling Psychology.

Universities in India requires BA/BSc Psychology degree to be able to study MA/MSc Psychology and therefore you can consider studying Applied Psychology courses. I would advice you to write or contact universities directly to check if they are happy to recruit you for MSc Applied psychology or MSc Counselling psychology with a non-psychology background. Some of the institutes that offer these courses are

1. Amity university - MSc Counselling psychology

2. IIPR - MSc Counselling Psychology

3. Christ university - MSc Psychological Counselling

4. Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) - MA Counselling Psychology

5. Bangalore University - MSc Psychological Counselling

6. Institute of Behavioural and management sciences - MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy

7. Indian institute of applied psychology - MA/MSc Counselling, MA/MSc Applied Psychology

8. SNDT University Mumbai

9. Sophia college Mumbai

10. University of Mumbai colleges

In case if the above colleges doesn't admit you, you can still consider studying a Diploma or PG Diploma in Psychology or Counselling Psychology. You acn either study full time or by distance. Some of the universities or colleges that offer Diploma courses are,

1. Bangalore university

2. University of Pune

3. Institute of Psychotherapy and management sciences Mumbai

4. Annamalai university

5. Madurai Kamaraj university

6. Indian institute of counselling

7. Institute of Holistic mental health

8. Gujarat university

9. Indian academy school of management studies

10. Jamia Millia Islamia

You will have to decide if you want to study Diploma or a Masters degree based on your time and financial commitments. Please write back if you have any questions.

All the best.

Dear Aspirant,

Thanks for writing to www.careerguide.com!

Well, selection of career should be based on your aptitude, interest and passion. Review your strengths, weaknesses and interests. I recommend you to take up Ideal Career Test from www.careerguide.com.

This will help you understand your aptitude, interest and personality. Ideal Career Test report will also suggest preferred career field for you. You can talk with a counselor/career expert that will help you choose the most appropriate career field.

As far as psychology field is concerned , it is of course very good field but in terms of employability, it is not very lucrative. If you are not very much interested and passionate about studying psychology and practicing it then you will get bored with psychology field too. Psychology field is for those people who are passionate about studying human behavior and apply the knowledge to modify human behavior or help people in the context of health or workplace.

Psychology is a broad subject and you need to choose specialization within. I am sharing different branches of psychology that you can pursue.

Clinical Psychology
Counseling Psychology
School Psychology
Industrial Psychology
Child Psychology
Forensic Psychology
Cross-cultural Psychology
Abnormal Psychology
Biopsychology
Experimental Psychology
Cognitive Psychology
Developmental Psychology
Educational Psychology'
Social Psychology
Indian Psychology

In India following branches are well-known:
Clinical Psychology
Counseling Psychology
Industrial Psychology
Educational/School Psychology
Forensic Psychology

Read details about each branch from google search. List your skills and interest to pursue specific specialization. Match your skills with the specialization and choose the specialization where you have right aptitude, interest and passion. I recommend you to take up Ideal Career Test before you decide to take up psychology as a profession.

Best Wishes,
