IoE (Institute of Eminence) is a scheme announced by the Government of India in 2016. So far, 8 public institutes in India have been granted the IoE status. There are many public and private institutes, universities and colleges that are under consideration for approval. In this article, we will be looking at the 8 public institutes in India which have been officially declared Institutes of Eminence and have been granted the autonomy and funds for its conduction. IoE scheme is aimed to empower higher educational institutions and provide the opportunity of world-class education and research at an affordable price to students.  

Banaras Hindu University

Banaras Hindu University(BHU) is a public central university established in 1916 at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. NIRF ranks BHU as the 10th best university in the country.

BHU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and Ph.D. programs. The different streams include agricultural sciences, medical sciences, environmental and sustainable development, arts, commerce, law, performing arts, natural sciences, social sciences, and other special courses such as museology, petroleum geoscience, tourism, etc. There are a total of 352 courses across 16 streams.

BHU UET, BHU PET, BHU RET, and BHU BPT are the entrance exams conducted by the university. Merit-based scholarships are also provided.

Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public deemed Research University established in 1909 at Bengaluru, Karnataka. NIRF ranks IISc as the 2nd best institute in the country.

Departments and centers in IISc are classified into 5 divisions- Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Electric, Electronic, and Computer Sciences, Mechanical Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Research.

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is a public technical university established in 1958 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. NIRF ranks IIT-Bombay as the 4th best institute in the country. IIT Bombay consists of 16 departments and 19 centers.

JEE Advanced, UCEED, GATE, CAT, CEED, IIT JAM, and MET are the entrance exams considered for admission (depending on the course for which you are applying).

Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi is a public university established in 1961 in New Delhi. NIRF ranks IIT Delhi as the 3rd best institute in the country. IIT Delhi has a primary campus and two satellite campuses located on its premises.

The institute offers 73 courses including BE/B Tech, ME/ M Tech, MBA/ PGDM, Executive MBA/ PGDM, MSc, M Des, Ph.D., and PG Diploma.

The entrance exams considered for admission include JEE, GATE, CEED, JAM, and CAT.

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is a public university established in 1951 at Kharagpur, West Bengal. NIRF ranks IIT Kharagpur as the 5th institute of eminence list.

IIT Kharagpur offers 170 courses through 12 programs-  BE/B Tech, ME/ M Tech, MBA/ PGDM, Executive MBA/ PGDM, MSc, Ph.D., BSC (Hons), B.Arch, M.Archm LLB, LLM, and MMRT.

Admissions are based on the marks obtained by students in JEE, GATE, JAM, etc.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras is a public technical university established in 1959, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. NIRF ranks IIT Madras as the no.1 institute in the country.

IIT Madras offers 75 courses through 10 programs – M.E./M.Tech, B.E. / B.Tech, M.Sc., B.Sc., UG Diploma, MBA/PGDM, Certificate, PG Diploma, Executive MBA/PGDM, and M.A.

The scores of IIT JAM, HSEE, CAT/ MAT/ XAT/ GATE/ UGC/ CSIR/ ATMA/ CSIR (NET, JRF, Lectureship)/ GMAT/ GRE or MFT etc. are considered for admission.

University of Delhi

University of Delhi (DU) is a collegiate public central university established in 1922 in New Delhi. NIRF ranks the University of Delhi as the 18th best university in the country. There are 77 colleges under DU.

DU offers BA (Prog), BA (Hons), BCom, BCom (Hons), BMS, BBA-FIA, BA (Hons) Business Economics, BTechBElEd, BLiSc, BPEd, MA, MCom, MSc (Computer Science), MCA, BEd, BEd (Special Education), MEd, MTech, LLM, Integrated Programme, LLB, MPhil, and Ph.D.

Most of the colleges under DU carry out undergraduate admission on the basis of marks obtained in the 12th class/equivalent. The rest of the admission including post-graduate and Ph.D. programs are based on different entrance tests including DU JAT, DU LLB, DUET, and DU Ph.D.

University of Hyderabad

University of Hyderabad (UoH) is an autonomous public research university established in 1974 at Hyderabad in Telangana. NIRF ranks UoH as the 15th best institute in the country.

UoH consists of 42 departments, divided further into 12 schools – Mathematics & Statistics, Chemistry, Computer & Information Sciences, Humanities, Management Studies, Arts and Communication, Physics, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering Sciences & Technology, Economics, and Social Sciences.
