For getting admission in psycho honours in good colleges in Delhi...is it necessary to have psychology as a subject in 11th and 12th?

I am a class 11th student right now and Im thinking of becoming a clinical or a counselling psychologist in future. But I do not have psychology as a subject in my school...so will there be any complication in getting an admission in good colleges in Delhi or will the scope get any less??

Reading on your question, I can surely tell you, please stay relaxed. It is not mandatory to have studied psychology subjects at school level as almost only 25% of the schools in India offer this subject at the school level. Colleges that offer admission for undergraduate degrees in Psychology understand that psychology is not commonly offered by all schools at 11th, 12th grades. So you will be still given priority during college admission though you have not studied psychology at school. To tell you frankly, you will not have even 1% issue during college admission for not studying psychology at school level. The only advantage of studying psychology at school level is, you can understand the subject easily when again you are going to study it at college level. But don't worry, colleges start the syllabus from the scratch so that any student who has not studied psychology at school, is able to follow up.

Best colleges in and around Delhi for Psychology honors:
Colleges that offer Psychology honors with high ranked are Jamia Millia Islamia, University of Delhi and Amity University Noida campus. Try your luck at your admission at either of these three colleges as studying this subject at either of them is highly prestigious and advantageous.

Electives:
There are many electives/ specializations that you can study as part of the Psychology honors program. Students can choose clinical psychology, counselling psychology, rehabilitation psychology, education psychology, child psychology, environmental psychology, adult psychology, industrial or organisational psychology and many more. Not all colleges in India offers all the electives mentioned in here. You should therefore read the college prospectus or course handbook to see if your preferred elective is run by the college or not.

Clinical psychology:
To study clinical psychology at college level, it is mandatory to have studied chemistry and biology at 11th and 12th level at school. This is a clinical program and therefore having prior knowledge to bodily and chemical reactions is essential to study clinical psychology at college level. Studying this elective you can work as a licensed clinical psychologist at hospitals and private clinics.

You can have studied any subject at school level in order to study counselling psychology at college level. So if you have not studied chemistry or biology at school its still not an issue. Counselling psychology itself is an elective at BA/ BSc Psychology honors so studying this you can choose to become a career counsellor, education counsellor, family counsellor, relationship counsellor and so on. This is a people oriented course and you should enjoy interacting with people to be successful in this job.

All the best.

Hi There,

I am unsure what you are currently doing and have you been able to get admission into Psychology majors at the Graduate level.

As such would like to throw light on the specialization available at the Masters level.

Please note that even an ARTS student, who has studied 6 papers in Psychology at the Graduate level, can opt for a MA in Clinical Psychology. Mostly University at the South of India, offer an M.Sc in Clinical Psychology, whereby they prefer students with a B.Sc background. As such for an MA student to qualify as a Clinical Psychologists, they would have to pursue an M.Phil or register with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)

Hope this helps.
Wish you good luck...

Dear Aspirant,

Students from any stream is eligible to get admission in graduate (Psychology honors course (graduate course). However, few colleges prefer students who have studied psychology in 11 &12th class.

If you don't have psychology in 11&12th class, you are still eligible to study psychology.

I recommend you to inquire about admission procedure in colleges in Delhi.

Hope this is helpful.

Best Wishes for your career,
