The UPSC engineering services test is known as the IES exam. Once a year, the UPSC Engineering Services Examination is held to select Class – 1 designated engineers for various government ministries. You will start as an Asst. Executive Engineer after being selected, and with advancements in your career, you may be promoted to Managing Director/Chairman.

IES age limit criteria

  • The age limit for a general category candidate is 21 to 30 years old. A candidate should also not be 30 years old on January 1st of that year. 
  • An SC or ST candidate receives a 5-year age relaxation, bringing the maximum age limit to 35.
  • Candidates from the OBC group are given a three-year reprieve.
  • Candidates who lived in Jammu and Kashmir from January 1, 1981, to January 31, 1990, are eligible for a 5-year period of relaxation.

Candidates who worked for India’s defence services and were disabled in operations with any foreign country, or with any other country, are awarded three years of age relaxation in the IES.

ECOs/SSCOs who have served in the military for at least 5 years as of 1 January 2021 and have been released on completion of assignment other than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct, or on account of physical disability due to service, are eligible for a maximum 5-year relaxation.

Candidates who are physically impaired are given a 10-year reprieve.

Qualifications in Education

A degree in engineering from one of the following universities in India: Central or State Legislatures, other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament, or Deemed Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

Candidates who have passed section A and section B of the Institution of Engineers India’s Institution Exams.

A government-recognized engineering degree or diploma from a foreign institution.

Passed the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India) Graduate Membership Exam; passed the ASI Associate Membership Exam Parts II and III/Sections A and B; cleared the Graduate Membership Exam of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London in November 1959.

The following qualifications will also work for those in the Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts): Electronics, Wireless Communication, and Radio Physics are all specific subjects in the M.Sc. degree or its equivalent. Candidates who are currently enrolled in an Engineering degree programme or taking an equivalent exam are also eligible to compete.

Candidates who pass the written exam must, however, provide confirmation of completing the engineering exam. A candidate who is otherwise competent but holds a degree from a non-government recognised overseas university may also apply to the Commission. Their entrance to the exam, however, is at the Commission’s discretion.

Citizens of India, Nepal, or Bhutan who migrated from Tibet to India before 1 January 1962, as well as those of Indian heritage who migrated from Burma, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka. Anyone from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia, and Zaire, as well as anyone from Vietnam, is welcome to live in India.
