Engineering is a vast and dynamic field that encompasses the application of scientific and mathematical principles to design, develop, and improve various systems, structures, and processes. Engineers are problem solvers, innovators, and creators who play a crucial role in shaping the world around us. One of the key aspects of engineering is the pursuit of knowledge and practical skills to tackle real-world challenges. Engineers employ a systematic and analytical approach to identify problems, devise solutions, and implement them efficiently.

Introduction

If you are pursuing a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) course, the fourth year would be your final year in college. You have to choose between sitting for placements and getting a job or going for a Masters’s. You will have to manage this year very efficiently. This year is going to be the year of placements, stress, memories, and good-byes.

Let us start with tips for final-year students. If you are going for placements and jobs, follow these steps.

There are two kinds of job opportunities for fourth-year students – On-campus placements and Off-campus placements. The training & placement coordinator of your college is responsible for bringing companies to the college. Some colleges or companies might have a cut-off of 8+ CGPA for sitting in the placement rounds.

Off-campus placements are the ones where your college is not involved. You will have to find openings and apply to companies on your own. This option is good for students from Tier-2, Tier-3 colleges where the package offered in on-campus placements is not that high. Off-campus placement might have a few additional coding rounds for selection.

Make sure your resume is up to date and that you have mentioned every project, relevant internship experience, awards, and open source contribution. Do not add anything you are not confident about. The interviewer might ask you to describe a project you have mentioned or ask questions about a programming language, and if you are unable to answer it, you are going to get rejected. It gives the interviewer a bad impression.

Tailor your resume according to the position you’re applying for. Never send the same resume or cover letter for every position. Your resume should also be tailored to the company. During an interview, your soft skills matter as much as your technical skills. Make sure you explain your thought process to the interviewer as you go on writing the code, especially in online coding interviews. Otherwise, there are high chances that you will get rejected. You will be evaluated based on your overall performance, logic, accuracy, and communication skills.

ENTRANCE EXAM QUESTIONS

If you know a senior that got placed in your dream company, ask them for a referral or guidance. Do not follow anyone blindly. Ask people to guide you only if you relate to them, or ask someone who has achieved something in their field. Find people who have been in your situation in the past. They can give tips that are useful to you. You can also reach out to recruiters and people from talent acquisition. Don’t approach with just a ‘Hi’. Send them a message explaining what you want from them, and make sure to attach your resume and cover letter.

If studying master’s (Abroad or in India) is on your mind, follow these steps. Applying for a master’s can get a little tricky, especially if you are applying to colleges abroad.

A master’s degree can be very expensive. Try to earn in college right from the first or second year to save some funds. You can by doing internships, freelancing, or any other part-time job. Make a budget, and work accordingly. If you are applying for a master’s in the tech field, try to publish at least 1 research paper during college, on a relevant topic. This your portfolio strong.
