1. After schooling you must be joining intermediate in biology including physics, chemistry and possibly having maths as complementory
2. Follow up with graduation in Biological Sciences with Honours (on a specilaized subject-Botany/Zoology), Biochemistry, Microbiology, Medical Sciences-MBBS etc.
3. Go for MS, MSc MD/MS-Medical etc then must qualify UGC-NET, CSIR-JRF etc then you can directly join lecturership in any college but next step is mendatory for professional and academic enrichment and promotion-step 4 below

5. Also a B.Tech/M.Tech with bio-engineering or Biotechnology background can go for GATE qualification and explore the Ph.D in Biological Sciences
6. If you do not have NET/GATE then directly you join any Govt sponsored project under any research professor (Principal Investigator) and avail the research fellowship and go for Ph.D registration
7. Ph.D research tenure depends on your skill and problem type which results into very good publication at national and international repute along with your prestigious degree.

Dear Aspirant, I am really happy to answer this question, reason being that I also belong to Professor category. You want to become a professor of Biology. The world Biology is very wide, and technically it includes many allied subjects, like Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Botany (though it is plant science). The Indian Universities or institutions do not offer a degree in Biology. They offer degree in Microbiology/Botany/Zoology/Bioscinces etc.
There are many western universities, which usually offers degree in Biology (specially in masters and doctoral degree). Now you have to decide in which specific field you wish to obtain a degree, so that you can achieve the title of Professor.

First of all you have to take biology in intermediate or 10+2 standard. Then in graduate program, you have to take biology as subsidiery subject. It could be botany, zoology, microbiology, biotechnology or biochemistry. After your graduation program, you have to pursue masters degree in specific subject like Microbiology or Biotechnology. These are the specialized subjects, along with these major subjects you have to also study minor or supporting subjects. After a masters degree, a doctoral degree is a must. Here you have to work on a specific topic which will make you learned in that field.
You must be aware that to become a professor you have to have a doctoral degree. Now a days, the entry level in indian colleges, universities, institutes requires National Eligibility Test (NET) certificate. Therefore, during the doctoral degree program, you have to prepare yourself and clear this NET examination.

The entry level will be as lecturer or Assistant Professor. To become a professor you have to work hard, you have to still prove yourself, by teaching, guiding doctoral degree students and carry out research projects. You have to publish many research papers, books, book chapters. The person is selected as professor after fulfilling these qualifications, there is interview also.

Therfore, my dear students, to become a professor in biology, you have to develop passion for it, and then join a reputed university. If you can pursue a degree in Biology (Microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, genetics) from a western university, then it will be very beneficial for you. Because a person hoding degree from abroad is considered better than a person having an Indian degree.
But in my opinion, any one from an Indian degree can do any thing any where..
Good Luck...

Dear aspirant

Biologists

Thank you for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com. Good to see students of this age are also thinking of teaching jobs. As i keep saying a professor is a highly responsible job and also a reputable one in the society, only those who have sincerity and passion towards teaching are suitable for this post. To become a professor of Biology there are certain eligible conditions.
1. Pass 10th with a over all first class and also have studied science that includes Biology in it.
2. Pass 12th class with a over all first class and also have studied Biology in it. Therefore students should include Biology compulsorily at higher school level. Therefore studying either PCB or PCMB are appropriate routes to become a professor of biology in future.
3. Study a basic bachelors degree related to biology. Students always tend to think that those who only study BSc Biology are eligible to be a biology professor in future and the truth is actually not so. Students should do any degree in which biology is a major component and it could be either a three year bachelors degree like the BSc Biology, BSc Biotechnology, Micro biology, Molecular biology, genetics or even a BTech Biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, medical biotechnology, environmental biotechnology etc. Please ensure that you have a 60% first class in this bachelors degree.
4. After bachelors the most prefered route is a masters degree and this also could be a MSc Biology/ micro biology/ molecular biology/ genetics/ MTech biotechnology/ industrial or medical biotechnology/ environmental biotechnology.
5. After Masters, students can either write UGC NET / UGC LEC exam and with this national qualification they can find jobs as a lecturer in colleges. AFter three years of experience they will be promoted to a professor role.
6. Otherwise students also can choose to do a more professional research course, the Doctorate level study known as the PhD. This PhD could either be in PhD Biology or similarly like any of the subject lines that i have already mentioned above. To study a PhD, colleges require students to go through 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 pattern. This is known as either 10th class, 12th class and then a three year bachelors or a 10th class, 12th class and a four year bachelors. Apart from this UGC approved colleges also demand a 2 year masters course with a minimum 60% and UGC NET exam as the basic qualification. Students can also take UGC CSIR/ UGC JRF to be eligible for monthly stipends throughout the PhD program.

So after completing the PhD program you are directly eligible to work as a Professor of Biology.
